Colliding with the GTA V train (and getting back up again) - plus - details of APB's upcoming massive engine upgrade.

First let me get this out of the way; we think GTA V is a very good game. We always look for great competing products when we figure out what we should be working on next, and clearly GTA sets the bar very high.

The GTA express train
The September 17 release of Grand Theft Auto V, and the follow on October 1 release of GTA Online had a massive impact on the whole game industry.

Using Steam Data as a general PC-activity level sampling tool (keeping in mind Steam only tracks activity for those game installs that originated from Steam itself and not from publishers' websites, which means it only shows a small portion of gamers in non-Valve games, but shows 100% of gamers in Valve created games) it appears Online-PC games in Steam's "western-market areas" took an average 30% percent hit in normal average peak CCU levels when players jumped onto the GTA V bonanza.

Given GTA V broke the record for top grossing 24 hour sales in the history of ALL entertainment, one would expect the wind to get knocked out of the rest of the game industry for some period of time, especially for action-oriented games like Saints Row, All Points Bulletin and Planetside.

Steam Peak CCU for players accessing PC Online games through Steam as a before-and-after
comparison of GTA V's impact on the overall online game market.
More specifically, because APB Reloaded is also very similarly themed to GTA V with the same player demographic (even though APB is far more skill and map knowledge based, and far less 'arcad-y' and 'aim-assist-y' than GTA), we were pretty much standing on the GTA train-tracks waiting for a possible collision (and GTA of course having a much 'shinier' and newer engine, much larger development resources, deeper content and years of iterative development under its belt made it a hard challenge to face).

When the dust finally settled last week, it actually turned out that APB Reloaded was not hit any harder than the average Online PC game (again based on before-and-after comparisons of average PC game Steam numbers for the top-100 PC Steam games). Not to say we didn't take a dent. But we are still here. Still plugging away. And still working on our ambitious long term plans.

Slowly but surely, starting last week, we also started seeing players returning to APB, which has helped us breathe a little bit easier this week. Our giant super-secret engine update that we have been working on since July depends on players continuing to support our game, so we are incredibly thankful that players are returning to APB once they have gotten their GTA fix.

Introducing Tiggs

For those who have followed APB Reloaded closely over the last several months, we recently made some significant team changes.

In September we introduced the APB community to a person we think is the best community manager on the planet (Tiggs, with 20+ years of online community management experience dating all the way back to Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies) and we also appointed Joe "Linus" Willmon to be the the new head of APB's production team. We also concentrated our internal efforts on the newly begun stealth engine upgrade mission, and numerous improvement and performance items.

Tiggs and her new team has also done an AMAZING job of keeping the community up to date, and leading the efforts around tracking down performance issues and continually updating the players of ongoing bug fixes and updates.

Our massive "Secret Engine Upgrade Mission"
APB clearly was born with tech in an era that pre-dates GTA V by one full ‘game and engine generation.’ As those who have followed us for the last few years know, APB Reloaded uses Unreal 3 version 2007 and 2008 as its primary game engine (basically the version of the engine used by the original Unreal Tournament 3 that came out in 2008). Therefore the upgrades mentioned on the Unreal 3 Wikipedia Page do not apply to APB's original engine.

Due to the vintage of the engine, we keep bumping up against performance limitations, and also severe limitations in our product development speed. Because we use many custom systems in the game, it takes a very long time for our team to make material changes to the game, resulting in a lot of features being shelved or delayed.

An upgraded engine would let us tackle important things like min-spec system performance, lighting system improvements, net code improvements and new graphic card optimizations and it would likely lead to a faster content creation pipeline by taking advantage of new systems available in the updated engine.

The team performed small upgrade tests throughout 2012 and then Johann "Aphadon" took a serious stab at the task in April 2013 to test if we may be able to fix just 'some' of the older rendering code that causes some of the frame stutter (for example with some particle effects that have been shown to have some serious performance problems). But taking that approach turned out to cause other big follow-on problems when fixed in isolation. So to combat the overall problem, the drastic decision was then made to let a part of the team go off and map out what it would take to upgrade "everything." And with that, we really do mean "everything"

July 17, 2013 marked the kick off of the massive engine upgrade to move the engine forward in time by 5 years, from the early 2008 version of the engine to the 2013 version of the engine, which is the version that contains all the improvements Epic created for Gears of War 3, plus 2 additional years of engine refinements after those changes and optimizations. Clearly Epic has worked very hard in recent years to allow really small targets (even targets as small as cellphones as evidenced with the release of Infinity Blade for iOS/Android using a modified Unreal Engine)

Gears of War 3 version of Unreal 3, circa 2011 (Image: IGN)
The 2013 version of the 'vanilla' Unreal engine contains about 25,000 source code files of various types. The original APB game and custom engine contains 61,609 files in total, out of which nearly 35,000 were source code files (the other tens of thousands of files are content and config files). The mission; merge these terrifyingly massive projects. To complete the merge it turns out that our team has to merge roughly 10,000 source files, representing well over 1,000,000 lines of code. And then get them to compile. And then fix all the dependencies between these files, and fix features and functions that end up breaking as a result of the merge.

By end of last week (October 11, 2013) the team had finished the basic merge pass of 9,393 files, which leaves them only a couple of hundred files to go. Once the team gets everything to compile, then the long and painstaking effort of solving for issues and dependencies get underway (not to mention the massive QA and testing effort).

An upgrade of such a customized game as APB presents some particular issues. The first one is that RTW originally created a ton of code that added custom versions of features that were not natively supported by the engine. Many of those features (day-night cycles, building systems etc.) were later independently created (and optimized) as engine features by Epic, but by then the RTW code path had already diverged from the original engine code. In 2007-2008 adding these items (like day-night cycle to textures, and city building tools) were huge engineering feats. Some of the custom code lead to the development of some really amazing functions that remain top of the line, like the character and vehicle customization systems. Of course it also lead to being dependent on certain ‘dead-end’ custom features, that are hard to break the dependencies for after the fact.

The new Lighting Systems supported by the upgraded Unreal 3 engine
The other big issue is that Epic traditionally performs a massive amount of optimization and performance work around each of their own releases for their own games. Most notable Gears of War 3 that came out in 2011, several years after the APB engine version we use today. The GOW-3-optimized engine is also sometimes referred to as "Unreal 3.5" given the very large amounts of code (network code, light systems) optimized in preparation for Epic's Gears release.

Of course the APB code base (to date) contains none of those upgrades (bar a few items we added such as some net code from a later engine and of course the singular integration with Scaleform). And in the last few years as Epic began to start supporting mobile and tablet devices (as evidenced by Infinity Blade) the engine started supporting incredibly optimized and compact build targets, something that was not really a focus in the original engine.

The upgrade timeline, and opening the door to next gen options
Aphadon (our lead developer on this task) will pen a more detailed technical post about the upgrade in the next month or so when we are getting closer to something that's actually testable. Also, as we get closer to launch we should be able to predict the performance (and optimization) characteristics of the upgraded engine.

The current roadmap puts a full 'upgraded APB engine' sometime at the end of Q1, 2014, but as with all roadmaps, that could potentially change. The team is clearly working insanely hard on this particular task, and we think it will finally allow us to also unleash a lot of potential that has remained locked away in the custom code the game has been saddled with. As an added bonus, by upgrading the engine, we also open some interesting possibilities, including a path to launch on other platforms in the future.

Next Up
Linus will be penning a separate post about the ongoing server-performance testing that's led by Tiggs and her team, as well as the Halloween stuff coming very soon.

Also, I am personally very curious about Rockstar's decision to sell in-game currency directly in GTA Online, especially given the many reported GTA Online glitches that basically could make the whole currency purchase process moot. It's a very interesting idea, so I may pen a whole post just about their add-on transaction system. It's something we are looking at very closely.

And as always, thanks for continuing to support APB for the past several years, and with these massive coming changes, we hope to continue keeping APB strong for years to come.

  1. This is one of those times i just want to leap ahead in time and test the shit out of the new upgrades... COUNT ME IN!!!

  2. Addressing GTA V is unnecessary but understandable. In anycase, Aphadon is amazing and should feel amazing. He deserves every ounce of support as well as the rest of the team on this astonishing task.

However, we still need more communication. Fixing the period of time that was "soon™" has scarred APB. What Tiggs is doing is great and all, but remember there has been downsides as well. Less time needs to be spent in the Social District dealing with trolls and more time needs to be spent in Action Districts dealing with the same few hackers.

    1. The discussion was about options presented by the engine. Our internal team is solely focused on the PC version of the game.

  5. While we're talking about upgrades; I would love to see a manual matchmaking feature. Then we could always have opponents. I could 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, etc. with my friends.

  6. i too find it interesting that rockstar chose to sell their in-game currency for a real world price. i also remember back in the retail release of apb, rtw made this same choice, even if they did so indirectly.

  8. I find it interesting that you refer to GTA V as more arcade-y than APB. I would argue that it is very much the other way around. There is more skill in APB (to an extent, though unbalanced guns play a pretty big part too) but I would argue that the way APB plays is very very arcede-y in direct contrast to GTA's focus on realism. The PC versions of GTA games are always a lot more skill based, due to the lack of aim assist, so that would be what I would be more worried about personally, if it makes it at all.

Really, they're quite different games in their focus, so I think comparing them is probably a mistake. I think what's most likely to affect you guys (I say this as a long time player who has kind of lost interest) is the general lack of things to do in the game. Eventually, it just gets repetitive.

  9. But GTA V isn't even pn PC yet...so your comparison is pointless. If and when it's released on PC it will top the Steam list for quite awhile.

    1. Basically the launch was such a big event that it took the collective mind-share out of almost all PC-games. Also it's a matter of scale. GTA-IV sold 0.7 million units on PC, but sold 20 million units on console. So the PC game for GTA has historically been a 40X smaller event. Of course it could change this time around. But the big disruption for GTA usually takes place on the console side.

  11. Whatever it takes to get the game optimized finally.. The game was NEVER optimized by RTW and has hardly been optimized by any means.

Truth is all the changes in the custom code has made the game run worse on a faster more updated PC. I used to run APB with a quad core and a GTX285 on max and get 90 fps only sometimes seeing it go down to 50-60. Now I have a Six Core, and a GTX560 and it drops to 35 fps in crowded waterfront.

Whereas I can play more demanding games like Battlefield 3 on max and sustain 60-90 fps. I'm very glad to see you guys are upgrading the engine because it needs it really bad. I've played games on unreal (3.5) and they run flawlessly on a laptop. Yes, a cheesy laptop with i7 integrated graphics. I tired APB on that laptop and couldn't get more than 15-25 fps. UNPLAYABLE lol. So now I have a gaming desktop and I still see lag, fps drops..

Now don't get me wrong, it's heaps better than it used to be, I've been playing APB for 3 years. I will keep playing it maybe with a hiatus here and there, but what brings me back is the customization.. That's what makes this game for me and many others. Keep that intact, optimize the gameplay making it smooth and pretty.. You'll have heaps of people playing it. GTA IV aint got nothin' on APB.

    3. There were many online communities back in the day for us more experienced *cough*older*cough* people. In the late 80s early 90s we had the good old Compuserve days followed by AOL which charged by the hour for users. If I remember correctly back then it was around $10 or $15 a HOUR. We had games like Island of Kesmai, Habitat, Neverwinter Nights, followed up with Meridian 59 and then the first what we refer to as MMORPG Ultima Online. Ultima Online will always be what I call my first MMORPG and was the game that really made me realize that I loved working in this industry.

  15. Will Linux (or Mac OS X) get support once the upgrade is done? UE 3 supports both now, and has games released using it on them already. If the core of it is all UE 3, it should be a matter of just compiling it on those platforms, and maybe rewriting HLSL to GLSL, unless the shaders are just generated by UE anyway.

  16. Tiggs is actually ruining the APB community and Reloaded Production's customers by banning players for ludicrous reasons, as well as playing as a biased admin to certain players. This admin has been seen time and time again, abusing her powers and banning at will from certain players complaints that she easily listens to. I definitely find this post wrong on her current status as a suitable admin. Recently she has banned a player for using the in-game /fart emote. If bans like this are issued where will it end? How many customers and loyal players is Reloaded Productions willing to lose to this admin?

    4. @Vegta Why an account is suspended or banned is not for forum discussion. Since you’re continuing to post here in an open forum regarding your ban, I will reply back this one time. As I stated in the many forum posts you made, you were first suspended for harassment and then it turned into a permanent ban after further review. You were not banned for doing the /fart remote. Players submit tickets at all different times and many times they are submitted long after the problem has happened. Real life threats were brought into play which made into a permanent ban and are not tolerated.

@Elara Things have changed over the last weeks. I am a firm believer that support and the Dev Team should never make their player characters known or join clans. Trusting information with a player on who your secret identity is will always get out and it leads to many accusations of unfair treatment. Certainly not something I have the time to babysit, so it’s easier to say it’s not allowed any longer.

Regarding the unique code you're speaking about. This code was given to her to distribute so players could get a 1 day premium. She isn't the first to receive the code, nor will she be the last. She was chosen this time for her community involvement with providing contests and the prizes coming from her own money (not G1 sponsored). She has even requested that her prize be given out in the form of codes so she can use them for future events.

    5. Even so, I still was not supplied with the reason, and you just supplied me with an ambiguous reason. Please provide me with what exactly what I said that got me banned. You had stated that suspensions/bans will be supplied with what was said that got the player banned. I have yet to receive this evidence. Again, I was suspended sure, but only after I used the /fart emote was I permanently banned since you have not given any evidence and I received a warning email on October 11, 8:26.P.M. which was the exact time I was using the /fart emote. Again, please provide me the EXACT evidence that was used against me.

    6. Vegeta, your persistant toxicity towards other players in harassing, trolling and griefing should be enough for them to remove the cancer that is people like you ruining the gmaing experience for everyone else. Why should it just be one thing to culminates in a ban, but a long period of spoiling and abuse to other players?
I do not believe you are so stupid as to not realise this, and you are now just squealing like a stuck pig on any forum you can find about how unfair it is that your toxic behavior has finally caught up with you, though you try to represent yourself as the victim.
I suggest you LEARN from the experience and use it to become a better person.

      Delete
    7. Ok so apparently calling me cancer, calling me a pig, calling me stupid. Why is this not harassment. The second I say something on the forums or on APB is harassment. This seems to be so 1 sided. This is not only apparent on this blog but on the forums as well as I have pointed out earlier. Calling me toxic, cancer, a pig, stupid these are all harassment words that are not true and will go unnoticed. Things like this have happened on the forums recently, and when I try to defend myself my post is deleted or my account is banned. Yet this person and many others continue to keep their forum privileges.

      Delete
    8. Vegeta, you deliberately set out to grief, troll, and be a persitant nuisance to people that just wanted to play the game and you have ruined what should have been a fun experience for a great many people. The analogies i have used are wholly appropriate for people like you, and like a cancer you have been surgically removed from doing this any more. You say you try to defend youself? You say that you have tried to defend youself on the forums but have just received abuse back. Did you think about the feelings of all the people you trolled and griefed while you were doing that? Do you think that griefing over a long period of time is somehow acceptable behaviour? you have a forum here to defend youself, so stop whining about your ban and please go ahead and try to explain how long term griefing, trolling and wrecking the game experience for other people is NOT a a symptom of a toxic person who like a cancerous growth needs to be removed? Please do defend yourself, because all I have seen from you here and on the forums is squealing about how unfairly treated you have been, but no attempt to defend yourself or say why you felt you had to ruin the game for so many other players.

      Delete
    9. A lot of people in the game grief and troll, This is something much more than griefing and trolling. This is something I am trying to figure out. I have already defended myself and provided evidence for my being treated unfairly. All you say is "you grief and trolled and are toxic." That explains no reason and gives no excuse for why I should be treated unfairly. Again, I say I have yet to receive any evidence of what I was banned for. As far as I'm concerned I was banned for using the /fart emote. Do you think that's fair? Drop all past situations and feelings that you have against me. Do you honestly think receiving a permanent ban for using /fart is fair? What matters is that I was banned unfairly and no evidence was provided.

      Delete
    10. Can you please explain why you believe you were treated unfairly?
What part of persistently griefing and trolling do you believe is acceptable behaviour? Do you consider your treatment of the people whose gaming experience you have actively set out to disrupt by griefing and trolling has been 'fair' to them? You are like a Pikey who lives outside of the law when it suits them but the moment things go wrong and you are answerable for your behaviour you try to hide behind the letter of the law.
You state that as far as you were concerned you were banned for using the '/fart' emote, yet you have been told that you were first suspended for harassment pending an in depth assessment. After further review of your account logs you were found to have made Real Life threats which are not tolerated and are certainly contravening the EULA as well as any kind of personal decency, and caused your suspension for harassment to be escalated into a permanent ban.
The fact that your ban occurred directly after your making an arse of yourself with the /fart emote is entirely coincidental. Is any of this unclear to you?

  18. Great article! I found this very interesting. I would love to see APB come back with a vengeance! The team sounds pretty movitated! I don't get where all the hate is coming from. I do agree you guys should really work on getting hacks & optimization fixed that ruined the game for me, I would definitely come back if just that alone was slightly fixed. Graphics doesn't mean anything, as you know GTA V dumbed down their graphics to compensate for limitation on features. Also the GTA:SA:MP mod was way better then GTA IV & had more people online that GTA IV ever did because it had hundreds of features that the average coder could custom code & was shared within a community. You guys could probably get some great ideas from there. How big is your team anyway? Sounds like you guys got a long haul ahead of you, hope you're not biting off more than you can chew. However! APB does have massive potential to succeed & with a new beautiful engine it could be a hit. Always keep in mind: This industry is ever changing UE4 might come out tomorrow! 1. We rarely ban players. We have all the reasons in the world to NEVER ban paid players, since paying players is what keeps the game going. So when we do ban someone it's usually for a VERY good reason, either for harassing other players or some other terms of service violation. Think about it, it's very expensive for us to ban players since it guarantees the player will never pay anything again. So the fact that we do it, means it was done for the benefit of the larger game community.

    2. Bjorn, you say people that are banned, especially if they are paid players and veterans such as myself, are banned for good reason. I recently received a permanent ban and no reason was offered. I emailed APB support on more than one occasion and they provided nothing but a default reply email and continued to not provide me with evidence on my ban. As far as I am concerned I was banned for using the /fart emote since I received a warning email for "harassment" on October 11, 8:26P.M. at the exact time I was using the /fart emote in social district around a certain player who threatened to report me.Why are there some people that get instant support on their ban via forums or email and I have received nothing. Is it because I am not liked? The fact that I have STILL not received a reason for my ban is surprising and confusing to me.Since my emails to APB support were fruitless, I had to resort to social district APB forums, where ALL of my requests for further understanding where deleted, some deleted right off the bat. However, when there is hate mail and harrassment in the forums by other community members, these comments and threads stay up forever. For example, when BirryMays says in a post, "Good to see him gone. Watching him fail at using the CSG was getting pretty dull. Plus, he just ran away from every match we got in because he thinks everyone with >10% accuracy cheats," or when Preo posts, "Rest in pieces Dweebgeta." This seems a little bit unfair to me. Please understand from my perspective, being banned seemingly without reason, without any help from either the APB support or the forums. APB is a fantastic game, which is why I have been playing for three years and invested into the game as well. It feels like I was robbed to lose all of it for seemingly no reason.

  22. hah i have several documented istances of unfair bans... and most of them took 100 support emails and weeks of begging

there is not way to fight them and its mostly luck based if you get any help

most of the time u just get a "eff off were not talking to u anymore" reponse

    examples:

taco was banned for birt manually over a live match without any evidence he was unbanned eventually

tempz was also banned manually, after asking for evidence he was also unbanned due the lack of proof

and instead of having a forum area for people to fight such things... u just close their thread and hide the dirt under the rug

PLEASE keep lying to your community...

    1. Hi dreamss - long time no see... Again think through this logically. Our preference is clearly to ban noone. Pretty much ever. So the fact that we are forced to has everything to do with trying to keep some sort of order in a very acidic community. Though I am sure you have never experienced that side of it ...

      Delete
    2. You know this will just get swept under the rug, god forbid you help the community more than them... what a terrible person you are dreamss

But yeah, I cant even contest a forum ban. let alone an in-game one (if I was) all emails are auto sent, cant even find out what they are banned FOR, can't voice anything on forums, with GMs, chat. but see, then there is a totally different side...

you have people banned who do voice the ban who get instant forum support. favoritism?

    3. Bjorn.
do you admit that there might be some false Bans out there?

if yes, what actions do those players have to fight the claim?
if they cannot use the forums or support, shunned from making BBB posts, and shut down all other avenues, what is a person to do? suck it up and give the game bad reviews to friends (who could be potential revenue)?

      Delete
    4. Bjorn, Kimiko here...
No one is disputing that you need to ban some players, and you managed to completely dodge the subject brought up. There have been unfair bans in the past, typically manually by random GMs who suspected them of cheating. These people had little recourse and support shuffles them away. These people were later unbanned after complaining to anyone and everyone that would listen, and when someone finally actually reviewed the ban they determined it was unfair and it was lifted.

You might also see dreamss around more if he wasn't banned from the forums... :P Again, there's rarely any messages sent to someone when they're banned on the forums, explaining why and for how long - this was a major complaint that I frequently brought up when I was a forum moderator. Once you're banned from the forums, you have very little recourse to even find out why or for how long - evade the ban and start asking moderators / staff who banned you, for what, and for how long.

If you feel a ban was unfair, you were previously supposed to contact the community manager. In this case, contacting Tiggs about dreamss' forum ban resulted in her telling him he'd have to talk to the person who placed it without telling him who it was (Jotunblut or Jericho, I forget which, neither of which is with the company anymore). So, what's the new procedure to discuss a ban? Do nothing at all?

      Delete
    5. Please allow me to jump in here. As was mentioned on the forums, a new support team was hired back in March. For training purposes we had many standard responses / macros set in place to aid them with responding and get them through the training processes. Now that they have a better understanding of how things work, the majority of standard responses have been removed and they are now responding like humans and have real personalities. They may not be able to help with all situations since they still have guidelines to follow but they are trying to make a difference. They all play the game and know what it’s like to be a player waiting for a response. In return many of our players have noticed a drastic improvement to response times when submitting a ticket

Regarding bans and suspensions; this is and will always be a tricky area since no one ever does anything wrong right? In the past bans or suspensions would receive a standard response macro that let the violator know to contact Evan Balance or for other types of bans their ticket was being closed with no further communication. This past Monday, we implemented a new policy where the support department will provide more detail with most tickets regarding bans and suspensions. If you’re suspended or banned for harassment, we will provide you with details on what was said and why it lead to you losing your account privileges. If you want to reply back with more information on the violation then we will allow you to and it will be escalated and the action will be reviewed. This does not mean that everyone whose account is banned will receive their accounts back. There will always be some that have crossed so far over the line there is no turning back and rather than have the community polluted more, it is better that we part ways.

Contacting support is the best way to get assistance with issues, using the forums private messaging system is not. If you still feel that your ticket was not handled properly, please feel free to ask for the ticket to be escalated.

    6. there really needs to be a "guide" for people to fight their account ban/suspencions. like telling them how to get the PB GUID (which is the as your account id)

what i suggest people to do is ask for the checksum/path/filename of the "3rd party cheat" it was detected so it could emailed back to support as proof it was not a cheat. cheaters or cheatdevs wont benefit from this info and gives a way for players to proof it was a false flag

but yeah im sure there are tons of fair bans that will claim it was unfair.

      Delete
    7. Tiggs
So you're saying the ticket system is now the proper channel for forum bans as well? I can't speak to any bans you or Linus have placed on the forums, but previous staff and several of the moderators previously wouldn't even bother to include a quick PM blurb at the bottom of the warning page, letting someone know they'd received a warning (or a suspension, or a ban). There are canned responses to copy/paste in a thread in the moderator section, and even if they didn't want to take the time to go copy/paste one, it only takes a few seconds to tell someone what they did wrong and the consequences.

A fair portion of my time moderating was spent answering private messages from people asking if I could tell them what they got banned for, and there was even a thread for a while where people asked what their warning level was, with many having 2 or more warnings that they were never notified of. To make this worse, one of the two ban options disables their ability to send private messages as well (the second one, it's not clearly labeled that it does this), so their only recourse was to evade a ban to ask about it - something which is punishable by perma-ban.

Like I said, the previous proper course was to contact the community manager if you felt you were unfairly moderated on the forums. As moderators, we were advised to tell people to take any issues with us directly to Aleenia / Revoemag / Jericho, when each of them handled the job. If this isn't the case now, and forum bans should be handled through the ticket system, I've not seen any mention of it prior to now.

      Delete
    8. Tiggs if so, I haven't received my reason for my banning. If there is a reason can you please send it to me, as proof since my past 6 emails have not been properly responded to.

      Delete
    9. @Kimiko If someone is banned from the forums and would like to appeal the quickest / best route is through our support system. If you’re not receiving a reason on the forums on why a warning or ban was issued, that is a totally separate problem that I was not aware of and will address with the moderators. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

      Delete
    10. yeah 4 of 5 of my forum acc bans did not send me any kind of notice/reason nor any notice for any warnings i might had

      Delete
    11. @Tiggs

Well, I've never been suspended (or warned, AFAIK) on the forums... This is all my personal experience from spending a year or two as one of the forum moderators. I stepped down a while back for a number of reasons, one of which was the lack of PM/email alerts sent out to people when they were warned or suspended - I felt it was very unprofessional.

Both staff and volunteer mods were guilty of it, and I brought it up with Revoemag, Jericho, and Jotunblut, but little changed. I'm a firm believer that every warning, even if it doesn't include a break from the forums, should have a note sent explaining what they did wrong. The warning system should encourage people to change their behavior, but without telling people what they need to change, that won't happen. Since the system automatically bans after 10 warnings, it's possible to end up with a perm ban for something minor, simply because you were never told to stop doing it.

      Delete
    12. What was your forum name? I do appreciate the feedback and if our system is broke, I assure you it will be fixed.

      Delete
    13. Yeah, it is pretty silly to have "silent" warnings. That's not a warning, by ANY stretch of the imagination. Imagine police officers silently writing tickets against you but never actually telling you. Then eventually you get so many that they arrest you for all your past offenses. Naturally your response would be "huh?!"

The silent warning thing has to go. Moderators on nearly every other forum give a very clear and unambiguous warning, and if they behavior continues, THEN they ban. There simply is no other forum out there that is policed the way APB's is.

There is a lot of room for improvement in this area.

      Delete
    14. @Out Fox Em I agree and now that I know it is a system that is not working properly that will be taken care of.

    15. @Tiggs

Forum name is Kimiko, obviously... :P I still lurk the forums occasionally, and if you care to hear them, I'm sure I still have the laundry list of complaints I had that ended in me stepping down (though, somewhat un-gracefully). I'm all for improving the system, but it felt like a lot of my concerns weren't addressed at all (even in a "we hear you but we're not changing" way) which led to a lot of frustration for me.

One of the previous staff strung me along about a project they approached me about for several months, asking me to keep quiet on it and he'd make an announcement soon. I got the feeling the project was never going to get approved overall and that he was just placating me, something I can't stand.

    16. Actually Tiggs, a lot of us get harassed by other players. They don't get banned? Only when it's at you do we get banned? I don't really think you have any of the right to touch any of the players so quickly. Remember: without the players a game is NOTHING. Without the game, another company will make one for that crowd, you'll get replaced. Don't get c**ky with your powers, you don't call the shots. You have to be fair and unbiased and do your JOB based on how it should be done, not how you want it to be done. Good luck to you on your new job though! (:

  23. Well I'll be damned, G1/RP you proved me wrong, and I am glad you did. I was very certain that an engine upgrade wouldn't come because of the cost and time it would take (I had some idea of just how complex the APB code was and messy as well).

So, again, I am super glad you proved me wrong, and I am also very impressed, that is one hell of a feat, if I could, I would thank each member individually (you can for me, I think this old RTW players deserves that, LOL).

Secondly, thanks for the info about GTA V, I was actually very worried about this, I didn't think it would mean the end but seeing population numbers had me wondering. Now time to push that train backwards (or take it like Hancock does, just standing in the tracks, LOL).

Anyway, I am now (VERY^100) (math joke) excited for the future of APB. Once again, thank you so much for proving me wrong, and also very fascinating to realize the experience the team is bringing in (Tiggs I hope we meet and chat sometime, it would be an honor).

I am looking forward to the future post with more tech stuff (please go full nerd on it, I enjoy those reads), and I think I might just have to throw some G1C your way as well.

Thanks for reviving APB, and making it better

    2. so was i angel , me being a vet player like you ( RTW, and three years apb : reloaded) thought this game was done for sure. i admit i bought GTV and ive been playing online.. APB is APB and GTA cant replace that( *cough and all the money i spent on apb LOL) GTA onlne is in baby stages right now. ( dlcs are comming along "soon)But the way ive been seeing gtav screweing up and how only 16 players per session... i feel their online version is not all its cracked up to be. the customization is the one the many GREAT features in this game. i have been in a breif hiatus but rest assured i will always be a LOYAL Player to APB( id rather spend money on apb than my dinner LOL). P.S. Angel weve played in the past , i go by the name VIOLATER ;) lol

      Delete
    3. As I have pointed out many times to people, APB has one thing no other game has (well at least in this context), and that is customizations.

It's what we called in my Business and Entrepreneurship classes the "Secret Sauce". That one thing that separates you from all others, making you unique. I remember when APB went under, there was talk of people buying up the game, just to strip it of it's customization.

GTA doesn't have it, Saints Row doesn't have it, and no other MMO has it. APB is and for hopefully the future, unique

And I feel I remember that name some. To be honest I can't say for sure as I have played with and against a lot, but that name does seem familiar

  24. not that i don't like the idea of a new engine but why waste time on that when the game has bigger problems like 2 maps with 5 types of missions that get boring after a week of playing, you need racing maps, bank robberies (maybe like daily events for both sides with robbing and responding to a robbery) in open world, zone control criminals and enforcers fighting for turf sooo many ideas soo much untapped potential APB is currently maybe using 1% of what this game could be

    ReplyDelete

    1. Right - and by upgrading the engine we lay the groundwork for actually building out features in the future. We agree. The game has massive potential.

      Delete
    2. You do realize by upgrading the engine, it could allow for a lot more of this to be possible.

Look at it this way. You want to build a log cabin.

You can try to build it out of toothpicks that are laying around, that might fallover, require a lot of patience, probably very weak, ext.

Or, you can take the time to go out, cut down the logs, get them treated and cut correctly, rent the equipment to help move them and then build yourself a cabin that is easier to assembly, strong, and looks way better.

What would you want to do?

      Delete

    3. then its great news ! thx

comparing the current one to toothpicks is maybe a bit harsh :D but i get your point you are right and considering they took over a game that was build by someone else having a new engine will be certainly easier then to try to update a game where you were not there from start

      Delete
    4. LOL maybe it was a weird comparison but you get the point.

Another thing to also realize with this, is that G1/RP has no intention of abandoning APB anytime soon as they are probably investing a good amount of money into it with this

      Delete
    5. I would maybe compare it to using a lumber axe and mud as the current system versus a chain saw and modern insulating and chinking as the new system.

If you mean the ARMAS team charging ridiculous amounts for the content...well, I semi-agree with you. A good portion of the content is ridiculously priced for sure. Paying $15+ for content that is character only bugs me greatly and I refuse to purchase (other than a top hat with a small bit of leftover G1C) any character based content outside of my main enforcer which I never buy unless it is the content packs (vehicles+clothes) and I have Premium from my freebie codes on top of them doing some sort of special deal (such as the G1C rebate) so I end up only paying 1/2 or 2/3 of what they're asking as the original price.

  31. I am greatly awaiting the engine improvements and potential optimization of frame rate, servers, and latency as a result. However, I beg of the RP team to NOT follow GTA V's example and include the ability to purchase ingame cash. The unrestrained flow of sticky bombs in GTA Online from people who have done this is one of the worst things possible in the game. They cost ~$500GTA and are quite expensive to buy large quantities of having put in the time to legitimately buy them. Then you have the people who purchased in-game currency and are driving around with full stacks blowing up your car and chasing you down every time you spawn. Its not fun and usually results in changing freeroam instances

  36. APB,

Greetings too all. I am glad to hear you are optimizing the engine with what Cliffy B, Lee Perry, Joe Graf, and Rod Ferguesson along wit the EPIC team and the forum community worked vigorously to perfect. In fact "Gears 3" is still "the" Gears title out of the franchise for many reasons, one being the net code.

I love APB for a lot of reasons but there are some things in the initial post that made me "chuckle" to say the least. When you make comparisons to GTA V with:

" (even though APB is far more skill and map knowledge based, and far less 'arcad-y' and 'aim-assist-y' than GTA)"

Which I want to laugh in reality because IMO, APB is actually more arcady because why do we even need "aim-assist" when everyone has a 2Dimensional Hitbox? Now I really don't care about the hitbox issue so much, or the fact you can "back-pack" as you would in Gears 1 and Gears J (a phenonemon caused by TPS + FPS combined) but I really would enjoy APB more if the game did behave like a true TPS. I have voiced my opinion in the past about this in the forums but the APB community IMO is a bit hard to reach, perhaps even harder than those of the Gears community. I feel if that is introduced, it would bring a true balance to all the weapons. You state "skill" and really there isn't much skill in this game besides paying $$$ to have the advantage and slapping in 'hax' into your aim mechanics of your game.

The only skill I see in this game, are those skills of a traditional FPS, ingenuity to be creative with your car, and communication skills.

But against a team of aimbotters, or a portion of? It all goes out the window.

I love APB, I personally think it's better than GTA's MP (i've yet to try 5) but just the concept of the game I enjoy a lot. I look forward to the new engine, and I hope with the new engine that the there is a solution to even out the rampancy of Hackers using aimbots. It is my only complaint with this game. I at first thought "hey it's probably a bunch of noobs complaining that don't know how to play the game :D" but no.. there are aimbotters in this game and it's not my opinion but I am sure EVERY APB player's opinion that's spend cash on this game, likes it, or is even considering to spend cash on this game that this would be gone. I'd like to play this game for real sometimes.. and sadly we can't.

Bring on the amazing Gears 3 lighting system, bring on the amazing, Gears 3 netcode which was designed specifically to put up with the Gears Gnasher (the shotguns in APB are a joke as long as we have 2D hitboxes, and center camera shooting vs. barrel aiming. **spend sometime on the Gears forums and you'll know what we mean** ) and bring on more content, but if you do nothing to combat hackers.. All Is Loss.

Epic did their share with Gears 2 - Gears 3. Ask JoeGraf! Will you guys be doing your contribution with the new engine ?

    - Regards,

One of your fans rooting that you truly lift this baby off the ground once and for all.

  38. Tbh I think a lot of ppl ( myself included ) are waiting for the PC version of GTA V. So the struggle isn't over yet.

I hope the Engine upgrade significantly changes the games graphics as future games like The division will be sure to take a whole lot of MMOFPS type players away from APB for sure, seeing as they have announced the PC version now.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So would this engine upgrade potentially make more game features a possibility? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy APB, but I keep taking long breaks from the game because it gets rather repetitive.

Also, I would really focus on getting the performance issues fixed. The game usually runs fine, but it tends to be a ridiculous resource hog. I have 8 GB of RAM and APB basically shuts down everything else running on my computer.

    ReplyDelete
  40. gg guys and good luck in future! APB 4ever!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I personally feel that APB shouldn't be updated or fixed and that this over-commercialised blunder goes the way of the do-do. Micro-transaction games make the consumer pay more and get less. With a $60 new release, the publisher and developer can put out new titles regularly to make the same bankroll or more of a micro-transactions gaming co. while offering vastly more content. Games like APB stagnate the creative process and stifle innovation just to bloat some corporate coffers. In the end the consumer loses. Porting UT2008 to UT3.5 for APB is one step forward and two steps backwards.

  42. An engine overhaul! Been looking forward to this ever since it was first mentioned a long time ago. Keep up the good work, Tiggs and Linus both appear to be doing fine work, I hope they stay motivated.

  43. It all sounds good to people that run lower pcs and even mid pcs. True even I wouldn't mind seeing some improvements with graphics and all that but the one thing is, the stability of the game and how it uses up ram. I ran an i7 920 with 6gb of ram and when I would get on APB R, my ram usage would go from only a 2% usage up to 89% usage. Now I'm running the new i7 4770k with 16gb ram and its still just as bad. I ran for the first 20 minutes at about 56% ram usage for running APB R, then it was like a giant ram leak and APB R started using 92% ram. There is no reason of why I should be using that much ram for just APB or any game for that fact. I ran CoD BO 2 and Crysis 3 at the same time all maxed graphics and never went over a 47% ram usage.

Then there is also the ping issues / latency issues. Going from a 65 ping to all the way down to 12 in just seconds is crazy. I know almost everyone has noticed a latency hit over and over again during the game, you hear about it on the game all the time. I can play with a latency of around 100ms but when it hits 300+ and stays that way for most the game, it tends to make game play impossible.

I love the game, its a great game and a great idea towards people wanting to play crims and cops but can't play GTA on a pc. True wished there were motorcycles and other things in the game, maybe even more open areas but its a great game and fun. I have been playing APB when the first closed betas came out with RTW. True when we were given the chance for our accounts back, I never got mine due to it was lost or deleted after yall took it over (same for my sons) but I still get on from time to time and remember why I keep leaving. Lag / Latency issues and lots of aimbotters but still will say, if the lag and latency issues, ram issues and the weird driving of a car can be all fixed with this new engine, then great can't wait.

I hope all goes well and can see some REAL improvements on the games mechanics and the game grows to be even better.

  44. "More specifically, because APB Reloaded is also very similarly themed to GTA V with the same player demographic" Keep dreaming, APB got a very different demographic, and it it odd to see that you dosn't understand it.

Also i think it is nice that youre trying to solve graphic bugs, and it seems like the game runs a bit better now, but youre just wasting your time, game is dying, i see a lot less people playing now, gold districts have died out already. I would bet that this game wont survive another year. Game seems to be totaly broken now, 9 of 10 matches are horrible balanced (i think it is because of the lack of normal players), all you get is either too easy or immposible hard matches, and only rarely more-or-less balanced matches.

All in one, this game got far worse then it was 4 month ago, less normal 200~ R players and a lot more cheaters and p2w.

And for allowing the jumping sniper crap going on, you will burn in hell.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Was not expecting this news at all, finally the best design choice has been made and I'm extremely glad to see this coming to light. Don't need anyone to tell you that the content updates were extremely slow because of the engine since you know that yourself. If you think the time that was wasted on creating stuff because it took much longer to get things into the game that time should've gone to updating the engine earlier. Leaving it later and later while you're constantly adding modules only makes things harder to change (it's the same for my web programming).

I may decide to play again after quitting recently ago due to the disregard of a blatent cheater who was originally named "XsAxiAn" until he self busted himself over ONE YEAR AGO but still continues to play and cheat under the name "xiAnz" or "xuNKz" now (enf/crim names) he was even banned on twitch for cheating (and I know xiAnz is that guy because he has a character on there he didn't rename that was on xsaxians account, he continues to stream from time to time with cheats and getting constantly banned on twitch).

Bjorn if you care the slightest bit, take 5 minutes to check this video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePALyc2VrCI (if you cant be bothered to spare 5 minutes spare 8 seconds to watch 1:34 to 1:42, the whole video is pretty obvious but that point is 200% solid, crap aim to 100% pixel perfect. Toggling much...) Even farfletched personally agreed he was cheating http://i.imgur.com/T53fWhT.jpg but was told to wait until next patch because it would "cripple the cheaters more". I'm pretty sure we had a patch within 1 year and this guy is still here.

Cheaters don't bother me, the performance doesn't bother me, the fact that no-one at G1/RP seemed to care about this guy at all for 1 whole year just put the nail in the coffin for me and my friends, we're sick of seeing this guy so if he can continue to cheat away and play fine, we'll just go play something else.

If you can honestly come back and tell me that I'm just another random hackusator and that video is 100% clean of cheats then I'll accept that and walk away. I'm sorry for spamming your blog post with this but there is nothing left for me to try, I do not have the tenacity to report 1 guy for 1 year. If you want to continue this in private conversation somewhere then feel free to let me know.

  50. Just some advice G1.... Fix problems before you make another. This engine might ruin the game(50%), but i have hope. Please help your game strive, there are other problems other than an old engine. Just my opinion.

  52. i have spent alot of money in to this game and i got banned for dumb reasons...

    Tiggs:
    Hello,

I've finally had time to review all of the logs from the incident that lead up to your banning. Your account ban is warranted, there is at no time that we allow the language that you used against another player. It goes over and beyond trash talking and is not acceptable. In the US, things that you have said can be taken as terrorist threats and are against the law.

Your ban on the account will not be removed.

So, ignoring that you called me a terrorist, that would be enugh reason for me to punch you if u were a boy in real life since im half arab and thats the worse insult to arabs, ignoring that, you gave me no reason for my ban... i just bought 2 months of premium 5 hours before i got banned... u can check my premium status.
The thing is that TIGGS is ignoring HACKERS and abusing her powers banning people with a sence of humor like me,vegeta and SgtTruck...
ALL i want is my account back since it was illegally banned.
Also check my Armas Marketplace Pucharses... BAN THE HACKERS! WHY YOU KEEP BANNING LEGIT PEOPLE??? TIGGS? atleast give me the exact reason of why you decided to ban me and all my Alt accounts... so you basically kicked me from the game not just from my account...

  53. So TizzieB got permabanned for inappropriate behavior, he submitted a support ticket that told him this and was told all further tickets will be ignored. He's received no prior warnings in the past or anything, so why was it just a straight up one off for him? I would like somebody to look into this for him since he's a very close friend of mine.

    1. This is the exact same behavior that has been happening to many players. Veterans get banned, they get no explanation and they get ignored. Until my problem is resolved I can assure you as well as developers and admins of APB that I will let everyone know what the current state of APB is. It is in a current state of corrupt, unprofessional behavior. One select admin is perma-banning Reloaded Customers without evidence. There is something going on, and I'm trying to get to the bottom of it. There is continuous biased and unfair behavior that is being exhibited by admins in not only Colby district, but the forums as well. I am in the same situation as TizzieB. I have been permanently banned and as far as I am concerned I was banned for using the /fart emote as no reason was given to my ban. This is something more and more players of the APB community are seeing and I will do whatever it takes to inform more and more players until this problem is addressed.

  54. Akna here being banned for using "third party programs" when majority of us have installed third party programs...Hell people at the reloaded office have third party programs why should it be different than what we have installed?....If "EVEN BALANCE" is unwilling trying to provide a legit reason why a ban was triggered could i please get my account back....

    1. Akna, they probably will never tell you what you did or had that got you banned. I am hearing more and more people, literally ever day, that are getting banned without explanation. As of today I have discovered your ban and Darktribalstar's ban. He was supplied with no reason for his ban either. The sheer number of people getting their accounts removed it mind-boggling. There is an obvious problem and there is definitely something going on.

  56. "... abusing her powers banning people with a sence of humor like me,vegeta and SgtTruck..."

Does your sense of humor include harassing a player to the point that you could have been taken to court over what you said? You more than deserved to be completely removed from the game.

"...I have been permanently banned and as far as I am concerned I was banned for using the /fart emote as no reason was given to my ban"

You know exactly what you did and the fact that you're still trying to say it was for using an emote shows that you're not willing to own up to it.

I'm sorry to be a part of this topic on this awesome blog update, but I don't care how long you two have been playing or how much you've spent on APB. You were both terrible players, not in 'skill', but in personality, and were a cancer to the community. You weren't famous. You were infamous. Good riddance.

    1. You still dont get it right? the fact that we got banned PERMANENT for things we say ingame its out of the limits...

    2. What you said in-game deserved a permanent ban, apparently, and I do fully understand what it means to be permanently banned and what adds up to receiving it.

    4. Actually, I dont know exactly what I did. I stepped into social district that night and used the /fart emote on a player and was banned for it. I was given no reason or evidence otherwise. If you're so confident that I know what I was banned for, please explain to me what that is because I sure dont.

    5. Actually what I heard is that you made some highly appropriate comments about someone's daughter.
God you are dumb as bricks

    6. "ur just mad cuz u never managed to win a mission agaisnt me :/ please leave ur madness somewhere else k?"

Is that your fallback when you know what you said but refuse to accept the punishment for saying it? Real mature. That actually gave me a good laugh too.

I've said what I wanted to say, so enjoy the bans.

    7. @Cpt. Obvious If I was in fact banned because of this then it doesn't make sense to me because I was already punished for this. I received a 3 day ban so this case should have been closed. So as far as I'm concerned I used the /fart emote on someone and they reported me and they banned me for it.

  57. HEY PEOPLE CAN YOU STOP WHINING ABOUT YOUR PERMA BAN. WE DONT CARE. YOU DESERVE IT.

Please stop whining on a blog post that is meant to be about the new engine upgrade.
We're tired of the wall-hackers, griefers, scammers, and all the annoyances that have plagued this game from day one, and i'm glad G1 staff have finally done something about it.
Do you honestly expect people to believe that Mods banned "PAYING" customers, just because they didn't like them. These alibis are 100% bull, stop lying, we're not that stupid.
    -Have a good day now.

  58. Actually, the reason your numbers have tanked recently is because the latest patch ruined the game.

Whoever is making your decisions is an idiot. A graphical overhaul isn't what the game needs... are you high?

The game needs districts that don't lag horribly. Anti-cheat software that isn't ignorable. It needs match-making that works properly, and most importantly it needs some means to protect casual and novice players from being face fucked players who make the game unfun.

District segregation worked great for that regard, and removing it without finding another means to make gold players play in gold districts was fucking stupid.

That is why your numbers are in the shitter, and why they will stay there.

Go hire someone who has a clue as to how to make a gaming environment fun. Forcing players into an environment where there is no means to report players for racism, cheating, rude behavior or extreme narcissism isn't any way to make players want to play your game.

Putting them in an environment where they're prone to getting stomped over and over and over again, and then telling them to get better or stfu is no way to keep customers.

Your community is awful, your developers are clueless, and the people in charge are daft money grubbers.

The fact that you have to alt-tab to report someone is ridiculous. The fact that there is nobody on the other end who gives a shit is even worse.

You killed APB with bad decision making. As usual your path forward is a distraction from the real problems. It's infuriating that a game with as much potential for greatness as APB was completely ruined by so many bad choices, and is in the hands of a company that has somehow made a business model out of shitty decisions.

  59. New shiny graphics is good a all. What about addressing the large cheater population and lack of player support reporting cheaters. If you really want to make APB a AAA game, how about a simple, yes we are (still) working on an anti-cheat system due out in Q2-3 2014?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Arguments against performance limitations aside, I really want controller support. I have a Steambox that plays this well, but using a keyboard and mouse with the setup really sucks. In this instance, I would actually do better with a controller than an awkward Mouse/Keyboard setup on my couch.

  61. after scrolling through 2 miles of comments, i finally discover the comment box (hooray Zoidberg is intelligent), i know this is incredibly late in the process, but i would LOVE to do some beta testing for this... this... small step for games, giant leap for APB. I am glad i finally found this information too, i heard a lot of it via District chat, i'm a US West player, with the machine proper for the full package of UE3 2013.
